Blood
Pre-soak in cold salted water first. If stain remains, soak in lukewarm
ammonia water (3 tablespoons ammonia per gallon water). You can
also try vinegar or hydrogen peroxide to remove color.
Wax
or Gum
Use ice to freeze wax or gum, or place item in freezer; scrape or
crack off as much as you can, then use an oil solvent or mineral
spirits to remove residue.
Chocolate
Pre-soak stain in cold or warm water. Wash in hottest water safe
for fabric with detergent. Remove any grease stains with dry cleaning
solvent. If color remains, sponge with hydrogen peroxide, wash again.
Coffee
Flush with vinegar to remove color. Wash using detergent and bleach
safe for fabric.
Crayon
Scrape with dull blade. Wash in hottest water safe for fabric, with
detergent and 1-2 cups of baking soda.
Deodorants
Sponge area with white vinegar. If stain remains, soak with denatured
alcohol. Wash with detergent in hottest water safe for fabric.
Fruit
Juices
Sponge with denatured alcohol; then flush with vinegar to remove
remaining color, then dishwashing detergent to remove residue.
Grass
Pre-soak in cold water for at least 30 minutes. Rinse. Pre-treat
with detergent. Wash, using detergent, hot water, and bleach safe
for fabric. On acetate and colored fabrics, use 1 part of alcohol
to 2 parts water.
Grease
Start with a combination solvent. Follow up with mineral spirits
or an oil solvent if necessary.
Ink
Ballpoint
Rub glycerin/petroleum jelly into area; let stand 15-20 minutes,
and wash with dishwashing detergent. Or spray with inexpensive hair
spray and flush with water.
Ink
Felt-tip
Flush with denatured alcohol; wash with dishwashing detergent.
Ketchup
Scoop off excess. Use a combination solvent for grease. Then flush
with vinegar for color.
Lipstick
Use a combination solvent to remove grease; flush with vinegar or
a mild bleach to remove remaining color. Wash in hottest water and
detergent safe for fabric.
Mildew
Pre-treat as soon as possible with detergent. Wash. If any stain
remains, sponge with lemon juice and salt. Let dry. Wash, using
hottest water, detergent and bleach safe for fabric. Note: Mildew
is very hard to remove; treat promptly.
Mud
Scrape off residue. For large areas, pre-soak in a solution of warm
water and laundry detergent. For small areas, use a combination
solvent. Follow up with vinegar or peroxide if necessary.
Mustard
Flush with ammonia solution, then wash with dishwashing detergent.
Nail
Polish
Sponge with polish remover or banana oil. Wash. If stain remains,
sponge with denatured alcohol with a few drops of ammonia added.
Wash again. Do not use polish remover on acetate.
Soy
Sauce
Start with water and dishwashing detergent; flush with hydrogen
peroxide for remaining color.
Tea
Flush with lemon juice to remove color, then stronger bleach, if
necessary.
Wine
Red
Use denatured alcohol, then flush with vinegar for remaining color.
For sturdy fabric, coat area with salt, hold over a bowl or the
sink, and pour very hot water through the fabric from above.
Wine
White
Flush with water and wash as you normally would.
